Rowing machine chain care

A chain-drive rowing machine carries every stroke through its chain. Dust, sweat and old oil collect on the links, so the chain needs a regular wipe and a light oiling. Some rowers use a strap instead of a chain. If yours has a strap, this guide is not for your machine. Check the manual.

When to do it

  • At the interval your rower’s manual gives.
  • When the chain looks dry or dirty, or the stroke sounds or feels different.

What you need

  • A chain oil suitable for your rower, as your manual specifies. GlideX Rowing Machine Chain Oil comes in a 60 ml bottle.
  • Two clean, lint-free cloths.
  • The manual.

Step by step

  1. Rest the handle in its holder so the chain is fully retracted and the machine is still.
  2. Wipe the chain clean. Pull the handle out slowly and wipe the chain with a dry cloth as it comes out. Let it back in slowly, then repeat until the cloth comes away clean.
  3. Oil lightly. Pull the chain fully out and hold it. Put a little oil on the cloth and run it along the length of the chain, or apply small drops along the links as the manual describes.
  4. Work it in. Row a few gentle strokes so the oil reaches the links.
  5. Wipe off the excess with the second cloth, so no oil reaches your hands, clothes or the floor.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Oiling a dirty chain. Clean first, then oil.
  • Too much oil. A light film is the aim. Excess collects dust.
  • Letting the handle snap back. Always return it slowly to the holder.
